Following the decommission the Hazelwood power station, the town of Morwell suffered from the recession caused by jobs lost. The Hazelwood project intends to create a new visitor attraction in the area and kickstart the local tourism industry. The original power station will be incrementally dismantled from east to west and apply deliberate control collapse.
The unstable collapsed structure will be then preserved by adding concrete and steel reinforcement. The ground level will be filled with earth and allow plants to grow, creating a biome under the ruin. The project not only will provide a unique ‘decay to growth’ experience for visitors, but also offer the local a monument that celebrates the industrial past and renewable future.
